What voltage ratings do transmission cable accessories cover?

Voltage ratings for transmission cable accessories can differ. G&W Electric has cable accessories for XLPE from 69kV to 500kV. For pipe type cables, cable accessories are available from 69kV-345kV.

What’s with the porcelain shape?

The porcelain insulator is not a smooth surface but instead has concentric protrusions, commonly referred to as sheds or skirts to increase it’s creepage distance. Creepage distance is important due to electricity’s inherent nature to follow the path of least resistance. The voltage will follow the shape of the shed while traveling from high voltage (at the top of the termination) to ground (at the bottom) significantly decreasing the likelihood of a flashover.

How do I install transmission cable accessories?

Installing transmission cable accessories should only be done by trained professionals. Different insulation types on transmission cables require different types of preparation. Once the cables are prepared, the cable accessories are installed on the cable.
