Tooling Manager

Reporting to the Director of North American Molding Technology, this position will be responsible for managing the Advanced Tooling Engineering and Advanced Toolroom related activities as well as projects improving our Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost metrics with sustainment and advancement of various manufacturing processes. Responsible for transforming molding processes to the world-class level through tooling engineering.

As a Tooling Manager you will:

  • Main function is to manage Tooling Engineering and Toolroom as well as projects supporting safety, quality, delivery and cost metrics.
  • Manage the Tooling Engineers to support mold designs, machines, manual and automated operations & new product development.
  • Define and create projects related to tooling improvements, build up and ensure tool delivery to product specifications and best practices within timelines.
  • Drive proper revision control and data management of all designs – existing and new.
  • Work on cost reduction initiatives through Advanced Tooling and projects such as leading and/or actively participating in COQ(Quality) problem solving projects with Epox Processes.
  • Responsible for creating sustainable processing methods and strive for mistake proofing with creativity.
  • Establish and maintain & log all specifications for all molding tooling and machine related parts and operation fixtures.
  • Collaborate with NPD Team to verify the design for manufacturability of new products.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documents with regards to molding tooling including solid models, assemblies and prints with all revisions.
  • Review production scheduling to prioritize and direct tooling maintenance and repair activities, including assigning resources as necessary for all PM’s, routine service, and emergency repairs of tooling.
  • Mentor team on methodical approach for problem solving, Gage R&R trials, A/B testing, and statistical analysis to provide input in the next steps of a development effort.
  • Lead and support Tooling PM program with documentation and support operations to sustain it for our molding processes. Lead tool design improvements/changes.
  • Create and manage tooling maintenance scheduling and tracking system that is visual, accurate, and adequate to meet quality & manufacturing needs.
  • Hire, train and mentor engineers and support staff to work to their full potential. Maintain department quality and performance metrics. Write performance reviews and solve departmental issues.
  • Review and write reports, approve expenditures, enforce rules. Recommend, plan and direct installation of new equipment. Communicate and collaborate with other managers and departments. Prepare and deliver Manufacturing Engineering-related presentations as required.
  • Work with the Engineers and Tooling team to ensure that mold designs are designed correctly and manufacturable
  • Collaborate with all other departments related to Molding Technology and Operations for success
  • project management experience, including, but not limited to scope, schedule, cost, risk, resource, and change management.
  • Work with outside vendors for tooling repairs and outside work
  • Establish, track and manage key performance metrics for project success
  • Support training for new employees on EMS procedures, work instructions, standard work and records.
  • Provide leadership and direction consistent with company and business goals.
  • Work closely with plant staff to develop “Hi-potential” talent.
  • Work cross functionally and collaboratively with other departments.
  • Drive the Tooling Department by working through constantly changing demands and needs
  • Collaborates and supports Director of North American Molding Technology to achieve departmental goals.

Leadership:

Manager: Responsible for hire/fire decisions; performance appraisals; employee training and development; handles disciplinary problems. This job will be evaluated on these decisions.

Project Leader: Plans and organizes the resources necessary to complete a project utilizing the necessary principles, techniques, and tools used in planning, control, monitoring, and review of projects

We are looking for someone with:

  • A Bachelors in Mechanical/Industrial/Chemical/Plastics/Polymer Processing/Materials or equivalent experience in Tooling and Mold Development.
  • Prior experience in Tooling Engineering and Toolroom management
  • Must possess skills to use 3D Drafting Software. Experience running simulation software and concepts of material flow, material cure and characterizing the material for feeding the simulation software
  • Strong Problem-solving skills with experience using root cause analysis techniques
  • Ability to mentor, motivate and develop subordinates.

Ideally you will have:

  • Tooling Engineering/Procurement/Design experience
  • Six sigma, Red X, or other problem-solving certification or experience
  • Experience working cross-functionally with all levels of the organization structure
  • Understanding or experience in reaction injection molding / APG / Silicone and Epoxy molding

The Physical Demands / Working Conditions of the role are:

  • General Office Environment, PC use
  • Light Lifting (occasional 25 lbs or less)
  • Standing

What we offer you:

Typical pay is $111,828 – 151,668 annually.
