Position Summary:  The Lab Manager is responsible for the safe execution of tests performed on products for new product development, production, and special investigation activities.  Lab Manager determines processes, schedules and procedures, equipment selection, coordination with outside labs and is responsible for the collection of test data and other evidence   Testing is in accordance with applicable industry standards. 

Primary/Essential Responsibilities:

  • Ensure lab facility and personnel adhere to all safety standards and rules.  Be an advocate for safety.
  • Coordinate budgetary planning information on items of capital expenditure, outside testing, contract services and expense items.  Monitor and control expenses.
  • Direct and supervise lower-level technical personnel. 
  • Conferring with Senior Test Engineers, Advise Lab Techs and Supervisor on technical matters related to equipment, setup, troubleshoot, process improvements and writing test reports. 
  • Actively pursue development of self and subordinates.  Monitor development of subordinates and recommend changes in job description and promotion.
  • Responsible for maintaining all laboratory equipment in good condition and calibrated to ensure accurate certifiable test data.
  • Conduct (execute) test programs to meet project requirements.  Travel to outside labs is required.
  • Follow and maintain detailed test procedures based on industry standards.
  • Provides directions to lab supervisor and technicians.
  • Identify equipment requirements to conduct each test and coordinate scheduling to ensure the availability of this equipment.
  • Monitor test preparation and execution to ensure safety of the personnel and equipment utilized in conducting each test.
  • Provide needed input to Test and Development Engineers so they can analyze test results, prepare a comprehensive written report.
  • Identify functional problems and suggest solutions. 
  • Maintain Standards library. 
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of applicable ANSI, IEEE, IEC, UL and other standards.
  • Participate in the design, construction and installation of equipment as required to improve test operations.
  • Prepare budgetary and resource information regarding projects or parts of projects in area of responsibility.    

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on electrical power
  • 5+ years electrical test engineering experience on electrical power equipment preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Familiarity with ANSI, IEEE, IEC, UL and other standards preferred
  • Willingness to travel to perform tests in outside labs
  • Knowledgeable about test equipment
  • Ability to learn and, at all times, adhere to proper safety protocols is required
  • Familiar with new product development Stage Gate Process
  • Able to write technical documents, like test reports, engineering standards and technical papers.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • A Master’s Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering 
  • Medium and high voltage electrical industry experience
  • Knowledge of Metallurgy, Chemistry, and/or associated processes.
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and use of common instrumentation is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have a history of creativity, innovation, and initiative. A self-starter driven to learn new methodologies.
